Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece is the daughter of Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, the children’s clothing designer, and Prince Pavlos of Greece. Earlier this year she made a splash accompanying her mother to the opening of the Valentino retrospective at Somerset House, where the New York Times later noted that the glamorous teenager now gets to wear mother’s collection of the designer’s pieces. Emily Jerome is the founder and designer of her namesake label. A former journalist the 24-year-old is based between New York and Los Angeles and creates a collection of contemporary womenswear that appeals to the style sensibilities of both locations. What inspired you to start your label?
It really began because I started to make textiles that were imbued with ancient, ritualistic significance. For instance, my first print was based on a motif that Mayan sorcerers wore during sacrifice. Making prints was something  I just taught myself how to do in my spare time while I was working as a journalist.

How does the design process begin for you? I tend to design very quickly.  I design typically a whole look rather than an individual piece, although I don;t necessarily end up styling it that way. I picture a series of looks in my mind, which then become sketches, which then become fabric choices, which then become construction choices and so on. I usually sketch quite quickly but spend a lot of time in person with my pattern makers to ensure everything is done right. I also make paintings or alter photographs which become my prints and my jacquards (sweaters).

What inspired your latest collection? My latest collection was a  modern reinterpretation of the aesthetic signage of the American West.

Which piece in the current collection is your favourite?  The chevron fringe mini dress.

In our previous correspondence you noted that the look of the collection has evolved since first starting out? What influences or experiences have contributed to this growth? Well, I started small, and that was partly because it was a side project which turned into a real, totally committed and completely engulfing job. Also – I think I just started to think about clothes differently as I moved through each collection.

What is the most important thing launching your own line has taught you? Be tough. Don’t be a priss. Be on top of everything constantly. It’s actually helpful that I learned Mandarin and Spanish. Try not to listen too much to outside noise. Design for yourself.

Advice for aspiring designers? Just do it and don’t look back. Be strong. And start small.

How would you describe your personal style? Not how I would wish my unborn child to dress!! Just kidding. I guess it is minimalist modern eccentric with eclectic retro touches. I like intricately shiny things, leggings, and mini dresses. I only own two pairs of pants. For shoes I say flat to the ground, or above four and a half inches. Nothing in between.

You never leave home without… My ipod/iphone

How do you like your shoes and bags? Shoes above; Bags I like small clutches at night. Giant bottega or Balenciaga bags during the day.

What are Your Favourite Pieces in Your Wardrobe? A contrast tan and white leather jacket I just made, a vintage gold beaded sweater that weighs a billion pounds (bought at Coquette), Givenchy cat suit, cuffs from Petra and Fred Leighton diamond ring that I wear everyday.

What are Your Fashion Tips? Dress for your age and your body type but dont follow trends.

What are your favourite magazines? The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and the Economist.

The last thing you bought and cherish is … A parka for my dog.

The thing you’ve got eye on next … The perfectly tailored three piece white suit (where are you?).
